Why, what, how?
Short Version
Facebook, Instagram and so on are annoying. The only good thing about them is all the information about upcoming subcultural concerts. Geisterstadt aims to collect all these events outside of these usual platforms and make them available in a simple and open way.
More Details
What is Geisterstadt?
Geisterstadt is an open collection of concerts in the areas of Oi!, Punk, Hardcore and similar genres. Here everyone can easily find information about upcoming events.
Since I live in the Rhine-Main area, events from this region will probably appear here most frequently at first. However, I don't want to limit the whole thing to regional events. The same applies to the represented genres. Events can go beyond Oi!/Punk/Hardcore and don't have to be just concerts, as long as they have a subcultural connection. Anyone who wants to participate is welcome to do so (see below for more info).
However, this doesn't mean that every band and direction will be included here. Events involving bands and people who are themselves fascists, racists, sexists, homophobes, etc., or who have no problem associating with such people, have no place here and will not be listed.
Get involved!
I will try to include everything I'm aware of here, but it's impossible to catch everything. Therefore, I'm very happy when other people also participate.
The more people actively participate, the more complete and useful this becomes.
You can submit new events yourself via the + button at the top right. This will take you to a form where you can enter all the information. When all required fields are filled in (title, date, venue; everything else is optional), click submit. I will then approve the event as quickly as possible.
No account or personal information is needed to submit.
Found an error or an event doesn't seem right? You can report this via the Suggest changes / Report button at the bottom right of an event page. Just briefly describe in the form what's wrong or doesn't fit and submit. I will review the message and revise or remove the event if necessary.
How does it work?
Events are listed in a grid on the home page. You can filter by name, date, city, distance to a city, and tags. To do this, press the Filters button and fill in the corresponding fields or use the presets.
For more details, click on an event. All information will then be displayed.
Events can be grouped by venues and tags. To do this, all venues and tags have their own page that lists linked events just like on the home page. Under Venues and Tags, all are listed respectively.
Export concert(s) to calendar
To easily keep track of some or all concerts, you can export them to your calendar app. This is done in the ICS/iCalendar format.
You can export individual concerts via the ↓ Download ICS button at the bottom of a concert's page.
Another option is subscribing to a ICS feed (Export button in the top menu). Here you can paste the URL you'll find on the page into your calendar app. New concerts and updates are then automatically synced with you calendar.
You can set up a custom feeds. Simply fill out the form to subset concerts to a specific town or the surrounding area. Additionally you can select one or more tags, one of which must match to a given concert to be included.
Why all this?
The major social networks are becoming increasingly unbearable (Reels, AI slop, advertising, the owners, etc.), but unfortunately they are still the best and most reliable way to find out about concerts.
Decentralized networks like Mastodon and similar platforms would basically be a better alternative, but they are still quite niche and a lot of information doesn't make it over.
Furthermore, it's also completely understandable not to want to use any kind of social network at all. Then there are other websites that collect concerts, in the Rhine-Main area for example events.rheinmain.social/ is a good option. However, some events appear here that aren't really relevant when looking for subcultural concerts. Also, the events are only regional.
Geisterstadt now aims to offer a way to find out about upcoming concerts without hassle. No accounts, no tracking, no flood of useless information. Just an open list of events. Again: The more people actively participate, the more complete and useful this becomes.
Mastodon / Fediverse
As mentioned above, decentralized social networks are a great alternative to the major social networks, but a lot of concert information doesn't make it over. To improve this, all concerts collected here are automatically posted to Mastodon when they are approved. This makes them visible to all users in the Fediverse.
This is done via the account @geisterstadt-oi@mastodon.social. Anyone with an account on Mastodon or similar platforms can simply follow it.
Feedback and Contact
I'm very grateful for any feedback. Something isn't displayed correctly or doesn't work as it should? A useful feature is missing? You have any suggestions for changes? Then just send me an email to kontakt@geisterstadt.eu.
You can also submit events and feedback about a specific event this way, but it's easier for me to sort the information if it comes through the forms.
